The Sunsmart Karri Valley Triathlon comprises of two separate events, a long course event – 1500m swim/60km cycle/12km run, and a short course event – 500m swim/20km cycle/4km run. The long course is completed by each competitor doing three laps of the bike and run, with the short course only requiring one lap of each discipline to be completed.

The Swim- The pristine waters of Lake Beedelup is the setting for the start of the triathlon, with a beach start into the relatively warm waters. Due to the time of year, the fresh water lake temperature is approximately 22 degrees celsius, which is very comfortable for swimming. The swim composes of a one lap circuit (short course) and a two lap course for Long Course Athletes.

Wetsuits: a decision on wetsuits will be made by the race referee on the morning of the race. The decision is based on water temperature on the day and will be communicated at Race Briefing. If wetsuits are allowed, they will not be mandatory, so regular swimming attire would be sufficient

The swim finishes with a run up the beach and over a timing mat, before running along Karri Drive to where the transition is located.

After exiting from the transition, which is located on the main oval at Karri Valley Resort, the cycle exits the resort along Karri Drive before turning left and heading towards Pemberton on the Vasse Highway.

Following a 4.5km, mainly uphill, section, athletes will turn left onto Channybearup Rd. PLEASE TAKE CARE AT THIS INTERSECTION AS IT IS SLIGHLY DOWNHILL, OFF CAMBER (SLOPES AWAY) AND THERE MAY BE GRAVEL ON THE ROAD SURFACE).

While every effort will be made to ensure a safe turning area, it is your responsibility to exercise due caution (ie SLOW DOWN).

Continue along Channybearup Rd for approx 4km (Short Course) or 9km (Long Course). Note the turn around point for the long course will be just prior to Stirling Rd.

After completing a 180 degree turn (Turnaround 1), return back along Channybearup Rd, right onto Vasse Hwy and back toward the entrance to the Karri Valley Resort.

Bidon Exchange (Long Course Athletes only). Please note: this is your one and only opportunity to exchange your bidon.

The course continues for approximately 1.25km past the resort where you will complete another 180 degree turn (turnaround 2) and return to the resort entrance.

Upon reaching the resort, Short Course athletes will enter the resort and return to transition along Karri Valley Drive, while Long Course athletes will continue along Vasse Hwy to complete a second lap.

The Run- After completion of the final transition, athletes proceed along Karri Drive towards Lake Beedelup, before turning left and running along the dam wall.

Athletes continue along this track for another few hundred metres, before a turning cone sends athletes back along the track and onto Karri Drive. Once back on the Bitumen, runners travel past Karri Valley Resort reception and out onto another bush track next to Lake Beedelup.

After once again travelling a few hundred metres, athletes turn and head along Karri Drive towards the transition/finish area. Short course athletes then proceed towards the finish, where as long course athletes are required to complete another 2 laps by turning at a marker placed on Karri Drive. The finish is located on the oval, requiring athletes to make their way down a steep hill before running down the finishing chute.
